WATERLOO–WE Build Waterloo has received a $1,941.40 donation from IFC Studios in Cedar Falls as part of their Launchpad program collaboration with Kut Kings Barber Shop and Salon.

WE Build Waterloo is an initiative of Hawkeye Community College in partnership with One City United, a local nonprofit organization focused on connecting people and resources to address the underlying issues related to poverty in Waterloo. Participants engage in a 12-week pre-apprenticeship, learning construction trades while renovating a vacant home in Waterloo. The first WE Build Waterloo house, located at 414 E. First St., is slated for completion this spring.

“We chose to donate to WE Build Waterloo because they have a history of supporting reentry into society for those who have been impacted by the justice system,” said Tony Kraayenbrink, founder and owner of IFC Studios. Founded in 2011, IFC Studios specializes in web, branding, media, and messaging services. They created Launchpad to give back to the community.

“Launchpad is a program we want to use to help find those individuals who may not be able to afford high-end branding services, but have a business that ultimately reaches beyond themselves and aims to better their community,” Kraayenbrink said.

Through the program, a business, organization, or individual can receive a 90% discount on IFC Studios services as long as they demonstrate:

  • a desire for good in their respective communities
  • a goal or vision that reaches beyond themselves
  • a need that is difficult to obtain or a challenge that is hard to overcome
  • a clear need for web, branding, media, and/or messaging services.

“The remaining 10 percent is paid to us, but is in turn matched by IFC, and then donated to an organization of our choice,” Kraayenbrink said. The WE Build Waterloo donation comes from a Launchpad collaboration with William Burt, owner of Kut Kings Barbershop and Salon.

“We chose Kut Kings because they met all these requirements, and are serving the underserved with their mobile barber shop,” Kraayenbrink said.
